Country: Cameroon
The effective and transparent implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) is crucial to the Paris Agreement. Cameroon, like many nations, requires enhanced technical capacity to model climate change impacts and assess future socioeconomic pathways. These modeling exercises are essential for planning robust mitigation and adaptation strategies and for reporting progress transparently. The GEF-funded CBIT (Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency) project specifically aims to address this capacity gap. This project falls directly under this initiative, designed to equip Cameroon and the Ministry of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED) with advanced scientific tools to inform its climate policy.
Role of Fokabs:
- Development of RCP (Representative Concentration Pathways) Based Scenarios:
- Defining radiative forcing levels and selecting GHG concentration trajectories (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0, RCP8.5).
- Collecting and processing greenhouse gas and aerosol emissions data.
- Climate modeling to simulate the impacts of different RCP scenarios on Cameroon’s climate (temperature, precipitation, etc.).
- Analysis of associated environmental and socio-economic impacts.
- Drafting a technical manual on RCP scenarios for national and local stakeholders.
- Development of SSP (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways) Based Scenarios:
- Building detailed narratives based on different future socioeconomic dynamics (e.g., SSP5 for fossil-fueled development).
- Modeling and simulating the potential impacts of these socioeconomic scenarios on the climate.
- Comparative analysis of results with RCP scenarios.
- Drafting a technical manual on SSP scenarios.
- Capacity Building and Training:
- Design and preparation of comprehensive training modules on RCP and SSP methodologies.
- Organization and facilitation of training workshops for key national stakeholders (MINEPDED) and local authorities.
- Skills transfer to enable Cameroon to autonomously track the implementation of its NDC using these projection tools.
