Natural Resource Management
FOKABS provides integrated long term solutions to natural resource management policies and practices that aligns with the livelihood and development visions of communities and governments. Our services cover agriculture, agroforestry, forestry and extractive sectors as well as the following themes: landscape approach, Ecosystem-based Approach (EbA), Payments for Environmental Services (PES), Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT), agro-sylvo pastoral systems, valorization and commercialization of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) and tree-crops.
Climate Negotiations & Actions
Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) represents a key pillar of the Paris Climate Agreement, international climate negotiations and post-2020 climate action commitments. In the NDC documents, Parties to the climate change convention (UNFCCC) have indicated mitigation and adaptation commitments to fight climate change. While developed countries are better placed in terms of the needed resources to take climate actions, many developing countries would require capacity, technology and financial supports. FOKABS is playing a key role in supporting many countries before, during and after international climate negotiations. On the ground, we are transforming national climate commitments into tangible climate actions that support diverse livelihoods and national development.
Agriculture is expected to respond to the increasing challenges of food security and climate change. To ease the challenges posed by climate change, agriculture systems need to be designed and implemented in a “climate-smart” context, that is, sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and incomes, adapting and building resilience to climate change, and reducing greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, wherever possible. As a new approach to guide the needed changes in the agriculture systems
Monitoring & Evaluation
There is an increasing demand for Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) services to ensure accountability in donor funding, and to learn from programme implementation to improve effectiveness. We monitor and evaluate the performance of projects and programs and help our clients to have the data they need for smart decision making. We also assist organizations in creating M&E programs that are essential to determine and track the efficiency of projects. Our deep understanding of M&E is enhanced by our broad knowledge of the development and environment domains and our experience in working across multiple countries and regions.
Deforestation and forest degradation are the second leading cause of global warming, responsible for about 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which makes the loss and depletion of forests a major issue for climate change. Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries and the role of sustainable forest management, forest conservation and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+) is one of the most cost-effective ways to lower emissions. REDD+ also has the potential to generate multiple non-carbon benefits related to the preservation of biodiversity, promotion of ecotourism, prevention of floods, improvement of water quality, preservation of cultural heritage etc.
Climate finance allows developing countries to undertake mitigation and adaptation projects and programs. Financing is channeled through national, regional and international entities. Financing opportunities include amongst others the private sector, national governments, voluntary carbon market, bi-lateral and multilateral mechanisms, CDM loan scheme, Adaptation Fund, Green Climate Fund, Climate Investment Fund, Carbon Fund, NAMA Facility etc.
Vulnerability & Adaptation
Developed and developing countries are vulnerable to impacts of climate change. The vulnerability cuts across communities, sectors and ecosystems and is undermining development efforts. We believe that it is crucial to understand the risks, impacts, exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity of any given system before taking actions. FOKABS therefore conducts research and analysis and provides context specific advice and solutions to plan for and implement adaptation at the communal, local government and national levels.
FOKABS provide clients in the renewable energy and cleantech with a wide variety of services covering the following areas: energy efficiency, solar, wind and hydro power energy, improved cook stoves, waste management and recycling. Our multidisciplinary team work with partners and initiatives from all over the world to support and increase the adoption of renewable energy and innovative technologies.
